The local Aboriginal community is made up of two groups of people. Those who have been here before settlement and those who were moved here during the stolen generations. The word Dunjiba comes from the time that the communities lived on Macumba cattle station. The boss would say "I'm going into town" or people would ask "where are they going?" the answer would be into the township. If you say township really fast it easily turns into dunjiba.....
There are a number of services run by Dunjiba Community Council for both the residents and for visitors. Everyone is welcome here!
- General Store and Cafe
- Transcontinental Hotel
- Railway and Tjukurpa Museum
- Free Camp
- Playground
- Water station
- Drive-in Theatre
We also advocate on behalf of residents to have improved employment, health, education and community services.
The museum houses over five rooms of fascinating history and tjukurpa (dreaming) for the local area. You might be lucky enough to find a local guide willing to take you through and tell you first hand what it was like growing up in Oodnadatta.
Great place for a good coffee, awesome breakfast and delicious lunches! Stop in and talk to the locals. All of the profits from this store go towards the community maintaining the town for everyone to enjoy. Why not do your shopping here and help to keep Oodnadatta going.
The old school house is very quaint...have a look at the paintings all over the building, imagine going to school here....
